I've decided to start a lil thread that I'll update occassionally about this brand new vidya gaem. It's a strange hybrid of a few genres, but in general I'd classify it as an RPG. It looks like what would happen if you slapped Animal Crossing in the face with anime, and then asked your friends over at Square-Enix headquarters to come by and beat the shit out of Animal Crossing, suddenly the group that made Rune Factory/Harvest Moon wants to join in and it's all being told to us by the lovely wordsmiths at Level-5 (the makers of Professor Layton and Ni no Kuni). And it's super fun.
The game and even its story revolves around a system called Life. There are 12 lives available:
1. Paladin - Uses a sword and shield to battle. It's the fastest battle Life and the one with the most defense. (battle)
2. Mercenary - Uses two handed weapons, slow but hits hard. (battle)
3. Hunter - Uses a bow and arrow. You can attack from far away, charge your shots and add status to them (sleep, poison, stun). (battle)
4. Wizard - Uses magic. You can use different elements to battle and even healing magic. (battle)
5. Miner - Uses a pickaxe to mine ore. Each ore has a sweetspot that will shine bright when you strike it, giving a better reward. (common)
6. Woodsman - Uses an axe to cut down trees and collect wood. Just like with ore, each tree has a sweetspot giving a better reward. (common)
7. Angler - Uses a fishing rod to reel in fish. You can only fish in specific spots but there are many of them, catch fish for trophies or to cook them up! (common)
8. Chef - You use a pan as your main equipment. You can use fish, meat, and fruits that you've collected to cook up some stat boosting specials! (creation)
9. Blacksmith - You craft tools, weapons, and armor with this Life. A necessity if you want to make better equipment than what the store has to offer. (creation)
10. Carpenter - You make furniture, certain tools, and items needed by other crafting Lives!(creation)
11. Tailor - You sew clothing, make fabric and GOD DAMNED HATS!! (creation)
12. Walter White (Alchemy, I guess...) - You craft bombs, crystal meth, potions and even accessories! (creation)
The story begins as your "unique-as-a-snowflake" custom character wakes up on the day of his/her Life ceremony. This is the day where you're called to the castle and are forced by the King to pick 1 out of 12 lives. He basically gives you a bachellors's degree in anything you want, even if you suck at it. After picking your initial Life you go through a tutorial that teaches you the basics of the game as you progress through the introduction. Each tutorial is different depending on the Life you chose, however you can still see every introduction by going to the Guild and changing your Life, the only difference is that they strip away a few basic messages that you already know by then. Aquiring a license for every Life is very useful as it allows you to keep track of every Life's challenge from the start, and involves more characters in the story because you actually met them in training! The story then takes a strange turn as dark pieces fall from the sky, changing the personality of creatures that come into contact with them, so it's up to you and your dog/cat/bird/dragon/butterfly/AI buddy/friends to save the world of Riviera!
So this is the basics of the game right here, I'm thinking about writing in this thread about discoveries and observations I've made, animals I find, funny characters/quotes, and basically tell the story of my character's adventure from a terrible narrator's point of view. I won't write it as a story but it will have a story-like structure as a whole, if that makes any sense. I also won't talk about game mechanics as frequently as the above to try to keep it as organic as possible.
